On January 26, 1972, JAT Flight 367 broke apart over Czechoslovakia.
Official accounts say a bomb exploded in the baggage hold.
Twenty-eight people were aboard. The only survivor was 22-year-old flight attendant Vesna Vulović.
The others were thrown out when the cabin lost pressure.
A food cart pinned her inside the tail.
The tail fell 33,330 feet (10,160 meters).
That is almost 23 times the Empire State Building.
Why did her heart hold?
Low blood pressure put her out the moment the cabin lost pressure. Doctors found that this stopped her heart from bursting on impact.
The section struck at an angle on a snowy, wooded slope near Srbská Kamenice.
Snow and trees may have softened the hit.
Woodsman Bruno Honke heard her screams in the dark, while wreckage was still falling, and pulled her free.
Her skull was fractured. Vertebrae were crushed. Her pelvis, ribs and both legs were broken too.
She told The New York Times she was broken and the doctors put her back together. Nobody expected her to live this long.
In 1985, Guinness World Records named her the holder of the highest fall survived without a parachute.
Fifty years on, the record still stands.
No parachute.
A cart, some snow, and one woodsman.
