Taisun: 22,193-ton Crane Record

Taisun sets a 22,193-ton crane record

Taisun is a fixed dual-beam gantry crane, a two-beam crane that spans the dock and stays in place, at Yantai Raffles Shipyard in Yantai, Shandong, China.

DHHI designed it to place enormous modules on semi-submersibles and on FPSOs, floating vessels that produce, store, and offload oil.

Its safe working load is 22,046 tons (20,000 metric tons).

On April 18, 2008, Taisun raised a barge filled with water for ballast.

Guinness World Records recorded 22,193 tons (20,133 metric tonnes). That is the heaviest weight ever lifted by a crane.

The lift broke Taisun's own earlier records.

Platforms are usually pieced together from modules of 1,102 to 2,205 tons, often high above the deck.

Here the sections are built on the ground and lifted up complete.

The controls are precise enough that the huge section lands in its exact place.

The crane cuts up to 2 million man-hours on one project.

The module is born on the ground.
The crane puts it in the sea.
